Employees of SMECO recently raised $60,000 for three local hospitals: CalvertHealth Medical Center, University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. The funds were collected during SMECO’s Annual Charity Golf Outing in September, an event supported by employees, vendors, and business partners.

“Community hospitals provide care, comfort, and hope to those who need it most,” said Sonja M. Cox, SMECO’s president and CEO. “This donation reflects the hard work of our employees and the generosity of our vendors who help make these events possible.”

How the Funds Will Be Used

Each hospital has outlined plans for the donation:

  • CalvertHealth Medical Center: Funds will support the hospital’s partnership with Duke Health, expanding access to cancer treatments and clinical trials. Jeremy Bradford, president and CEO, said, “This support strengthens our ability to offer advanced care to the community.”
  • University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center: The donation will go toward cancer prevention and treatment programs, including screenings and educational outreach. President and CEO Noel Cervino said, “These funds will help us provide resources and education to reduce cancer risks.”
  • MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital: The hospital plans to refresh its Emergency Department with updated flooring, cabinetry, and workstations. Emily Cantrell-Stagner, assistant vice president of philanthropy, said, “This contribution makes a meaningful difference in improving our ability to deliver care.”

A Tradition of Giving

SMECO has hosted its Annual Charity Golf Outing for more than a decade, raising over $600,000 for local organizations in Southern Maryland.

“This event wouldn’t be possible without our generous business partners,” said Natalie Cotton, SMECO’s government and public affairs director. AUI Power served as the Presenting Sponsor, and other major sponsors included SMCIS, ULCS, Milwaukee Tools, and Schneider Electric.
