The Calvert County Department of Public Safety has issued an animal safety alert in response to forecasted severe cold temperatures. The alert is in effect from Friday, January 3, through Friday, January 10, and outlines measures that animal owners and custodians must take to protect pets and livestock from extreme weather conditions.

Required Actions for Animal Safety

During this period, all animal owners or custodians must ensure the following:

  • Dogs and Cats: Pets should be brought indoors. If left outside, they must have continuous access to a solid shelter that is heated or positioned against prevailing winds to help maintain their core body temperature.
  • Livestock and Farm Animals: Animals must have access to weather protection that allows them to maintain their core body temperature.
  • Food and Water:
    • Livestock and farm animals should be provided additional food to compensate for increased caloric needs in cold conditions.
    • All animals outdoors must have access to clean, unfrozen water at all times.
  • Monitoring: Animals outdoors must be continually checked for signs of distress.

Penalties for Noncompliance

Failure to adhere to these safety requirements could result in penalties, including fines of up to $1,000 or a maximum of 30 days in jail.

Reporting Concerns

Residents who suspect animal neglect or violations of these safety measures can contact the Animal Control Division at 410-535-1600, ext. 2526, during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Reports can also be made after hours by calling the non-emergency line at 410-535-3491.

The Department of Public Safety urges all animal owners to prioritize the well-being of their animals during this period of extreme cold. Proactive measures can help prevent unnecessary suffering and ensure compliance with local regulations.
