Prince Frederick, MD (Jan. 10, 2025) – After a two-day trial, a Calvert County jury convicted Mark Roosevelt Fields, 39, of aggravated animal cruelty and dangerous weapons charges on Friday. The charges stem from an incident in May 2024, where Fields stabbed and killed his cousin’s dog following a family dispute.

Fields is being held without bond at the Calvert County Detention Center and faces up to six years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for March 14, 2025.

According to court documents, on May 29, 2024, Fields entered a property on Adelina Road armed with a knife. Witnesses stated that Fields called out to one of the residents and, when the resident’s wife appeared, proceeded to stab the family dog.

The severely injured dog was transported to a veterinary clinic but was euthanized due to the extent of its injuries. Animal Control Officer King, who responded to the scene, confirmed the fatal attack.

Fields was arrested and taken into custody following the incident. During a bail review hearing on June 3, 2024, Judge Robert B. Riddle ordered Fields to be held without bond.

The case, prosecuted by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Christopher J. Monte, concluded with Fields’ conviction after evidence and testimony from witnesses were presented. Fields was found guilty of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, as well as charges related to the concealment and use of a dangerous weapon.

Fields’ trial, originally scheduled for July 2024, experienced delays before concluding in January 2025. He has remained in custody throughout the legal process. With sentencing set for March 2025, Fields faces the possibility of six years in prison for his actions.
