Southern Maryland (Jan. 11, 2025) – The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC), a division of the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, has published two new feasibility studies aimed at advancing the region’s agriculture and aquaculture sectors. These studies, conducted by Pierwater International and funded by the Rural Maryland Economic Development Fund grant, are now available as open-source documents to benefit stakeholders across the region.

Sustainable Blue Catfish Initiative

One study, titled the Southern Maryland Blue Catfish Market Research Study, focuses on managing the invasive blue catfish species in the Chesapeake Bay while creating sustainable economic opportunities.

The initiative highlights profitable and eco-friendly practices such as processing blue catfish into faux leather and fish silage, in addition to its value in food markets. By harvesting blue catfish, the project aims to control the species’ population while targeting market growth in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Economic Impact of Agriculture and Aquaculture

The second study, Southern Maryland Agriculture & Aquaculture Analysis, examines the economic contributions and challenges of the agriculture and aquaculture industries in the region. Agriculture alone generates more than $158 million annually for the local economy, supporting nearly 2,300 jobs. However, challenges such as workforce shortages and limited processing infrastructure hinder further growth.

Strategic recommendations from the report include:

  • Investing in mid-supply chain infrastructure for processing and aggregation.
  • Advocating for policy changes to support industry growth.
  • Encouraging public-private partnerships to expand market access and promote sustainability.

A Path Forward

“These studies highlight the untapped potential in Southern Maryland’s agriculture and aquaculture industries,” SMADC representatives said. “By addressing current challenges and fostering innovation, the region can create new markets and sustainable practices that benefit the environment and local economies.”

The full feasibility studies are now available as open-source resources for stakeholders, offering guidance for improving infrastructure and market strategies in Southern Maryland.
