Sunderland, MD – Firefighters from Huntingtown and Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a dump truck fire threatening a detached garage in the 6200 block of Federal Oaks Drive this morning. The incident, reported around 11:44 a.m., prompted a swift response to prevent further damage.
Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department’s Engine 61, led by K. Richardson, was the first to arrive on the scene, finding the large dump truck fully engulfed in flames. The fire posed an immediate threat to a nearby detached garage. Crews quickly deployed a bumper line to extinguish the fire and secured the truck’s saddle tanks to mitigate further hazards. Chief T. Sealey from Dunkirk VFD assumed command upon arrival and scaled back the response to units from Companies 6 and 5 after confirming no fire extension to the garage. Crews remained on the scene for approximately 90 minutes to ensure the area was safe.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of responders, the fire was brought under control within minutes, preventing significant damage to the nearby structure. The incident has been turned over to the Fire Marshal’s Office for investigation.
Units on the scene included Huntingtown VFD’s Engine 61 (K. Richardson), Engine 62 (Constabile), Squad 6 (D. Cox), Tanker 6 (C. Hardesty), and Ambulance 69 (E. Holzberger). Dunkirk VFD dispatched Engine 52, Truck 5, Chief 5, and Chief 5B. Additional support was provided by PA205.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
