CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — The victim of a deadly house fire in Hughesville last week has been identified as 94-year-old Dora Lee Douglas, the homeowner. According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Douglas died from thermal burn injuries and smoke inhalation.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical services were called to a home on Driftwood Place just after 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2025. A concerned friend, unable to reach Douglas for several days, requested a welfare check. Upon entering the residence, first responders discovered Douglas deceased with burn injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
While investigators have not determined the exact cause of the fire, the Office of the State Fire Marshal has stated that the possibility of an accidental ignition involving the kitchen stove cannot be ruled out.
Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray extended condolences to the victim’s loved ones and the community. “I extend my deepest condolences to the friends and family of Ms. Douglas, as well as the community affected by the tragic loss,” Mowbray said.
He also highlighted the importance of fire safety as the investigation continues. “As we enter 2025, this is a solemn reminder of the importance of fire safety in our homes and communities. This year, we encourage everyone to take a moment to review fire safety practices, check smoke alarms, and ensure that fire prevention measures are in place. Together, we can reduce the risk of such devastating losses in the future,” Mowbray said.
The fire caused significant damage to the home, and investigators are working to pinpoint the origin and cause. The Office of the State Fire Marshal urges all Maryland residents to check the functionality of smoke alarms and to follow fire safety guidelines.
