In a significant win for its efforts to combat homelessness and support vulnerable families, LifeStyles of Maryland has been awarded a $200,000 grant through the Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Awards®. The funds will accelerate the completion of the Southern Crossing project, a vital initiative providing temporary housing and resources to individuals and families in need.
Southern Crossing is a comprehensive housing program designed to accommodate up to 77 residents for as long as 18 months. The facility will serve as both a safe haven and a resource hub, offering tailored services to help residents overcome hardships and rebuild their lives.

Key features of the program include:
- Safe Temporary Housing: Supportive accommodations designed for stability.
- Case Management: Professional guidance to address individual challenges.
- Financial Education: Workshops and support to improve financial literacy and repair credit.
- Permanent Housing Assistance: Resources to help residents transition to long-term homes.
- Job Training Opportunities: Skill-building in areas such as culinary arts, technology, and media.
This infusion of funding will allow LifeStyles of Maryland to complete critical final construction stages, bringing the project closer to welcoming its first residents.
The grant was made possible by the support of local community members, whose votes in Chick-fil-A’s app-based contest last fall helped secure the funding. “We couldn’t have done this without our community. Your votes and belief in our vision made this possible,” said a representative from LifeStyles of Maryland.
The organization also highlighted the roles of Ken Weikel, franchise owner of Chick-fil-A Waldorf, and John Flatley, franchise owner of Chick-fil-A La Plata, in nominating the project. Their collaboration underscored the power of partnerships in addressing pressing community issues.
Established in 2015, the Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Awards honor nonprofit organizations that align with the company’s mission to care for people, communities, and the planet. This year, $6 million in grants were distributed to 56 organizations nationwide.
LifeStyles of Maryland joins an elite group of recipients recognized for their dedication to uplifting their communities. The grant will help amplify the impact of Southern Crossing, enabling it to deliver critical services and support to those who need it most.
With the completion of Southern Crossing on the horizon, LifeStyles of Maryland aims to offer a lifeline to individuals and families facing housing insecurity. The project represents a holistic approach to breaking the cycle of poverty by equipping residents with the tools they need to succeed long-term.
As Southern Crossing nears completion, LifeStyles of Maryland is preparing to create a supportive community that fosters hope, growth, and transformation.
