Charles County Sheriff’s detectives have charged a 16-year-old suspect in connection with the possession and distribution of child pornography following an investigation triggered by multiple cyber tips reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

The case began in September 2023, when a cloud storage provider alerted NCMEC about a user storing explicit child pornography files in their account. Shortly afterward, a social media provider submitted a separate tip to NCMEC, reporting an account holder who was uploading, trading, and selling similar content through their platform.

Investigation Links Two Tips to Same Residence

Detectives from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) pursued both leads and discovered they were connected. Both tips led investigators to a single residence, where a 16-year-old juvenile suspect was identified. Following a search and seizure warrant at the home, investigators recovered multiple electronic devices.

Upon examination by CCSO’s Digital Forensics Unit, further evidence of the possession and distribution of child pornography was found.

Charges Filed Against Juvenile Suspect

On December 23, 2024, the juvenile suspect was charged under Maryland law with five counts of possession and 33 counts of distribution of child pornography. The investigation revealed the explicit material included images of children around the age of 10. Authorities confirmed there is no indication that the children depicted in the images were from the local area.

Detective Horrocks continues to investigate the case.

Community Awareness and Online Safety Resources

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the importance of parental awareness regarding the signs of online exploitation. To support families in safeguarding their children, they highlight resources such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) NetSmartz program. This initiative provides age-appropriate tools, including videos and activities, to educate children about making safer online and offline choices.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to learn about the terminology used in the buying, selling, and trading of explicit images online, as well as prevention strategies to combat this growing issue.
