The Board of Education recognized five exceptional staff members during its Jan. 14 meeting, applauding their dedication and contributions to their schools and communities. Honorees included Kathryn Defayette from Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School, Amanda Hastings of Henry E. Lackey High School, Elaina Malone of John Hanson Middle School, Tamala Queen of C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School, and Susan Thacker of T.C. Martin Elementary School.
Kathryn Defayette – Supporting Student Growth Through Math Intervention
Kathryn Defayette, a fifth-grade teacher at Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School, was recognized for her innovative approach to teaching mathematics. Originally joining the school as a general education teacher after a tenure as a special education teacher in Prince George’s County, Defayette transitioned into the role of a math interventionist.
“The shift allowed me to focus on helping students not only build their mathematical skills but also develop confidence and enthusiasm for the subject,” Defayette said. She emphasized that while improving test scores is significant, her greatest satisfaction comes from seeing students become confident, collaborative problem solvers.
Defayette is actively pursuing National Board Certification and serves as a member of the school’s professional leadership team, playing a pivotal role in fostering academic excellence.
Amanda Hastings – Beyond the Chemistry Classroom
Amanda Hastings of Henry E. Lackey High School was celebrated for her multifaceted contributions that extend far beyond her role as a chemistry teacher. As the Environmental Club sponsor, she encourages environmental stewardship among students and staff. Additionally, Hastings directs the school’s a cappella group and has become a vital part of the drama department.
When the school lacked a drama teacher, Hastings took charge of the spring musical, ensuring seniors experienced their final performance. “Our students, particularly our seniors, would have missed out on their final performance of their high school career had Ms. Hastings not stepped up to produce the show,” Principal Cheryl K. Davis said.
This past summer, Hastings earned her theater certification, attended the Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID) conference, and worked in both community and CCPS summer productions. Despite her extensive commitments, she maintained a rigorous and engaging chemistry curriculum.
Elaina Malone – Advocating for Health and Wellness
Elaina Malone, a physical education and health teacher at John Hanson Middle School, was recognized for her advocacy of health and wellness education. Her initiatives include creating a school garden, implementing physical activity break boxes for teachers, and promoting Mental Health Awareness Month.
“Her commitment to student and staff well-being is evident,” Principal Ben Kohlhorst said. In addition to teaching, Malone coaches the girls track team and manages equipment orders, scheduling, and the efficient use of health rooms. She has contributed to curriculum development for PE and health and serves as the coordinator for the school’s Student Service Learning program.
In 2023, Malone was honored with the Simon McNeely Award by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) Maryland, which recognizes leadership and innovative teaching practices in physical education.
Tamala Queen – A Welcoming Presence
For nearly a decade, Tamala Queen has been a vital part of C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School, serving as its registration secretary. Often the first face students and families see upon entering the school, Queen sets a positive tone through her welcoming demeanor.
“Ms. Queen’s steadfast commitment and unwavering consistency make her an invaluable member of our team,” Principal Carrie Burke said. Beyond managing registration duties, Queen addresses parent concerns, monitors visitors, and ensures school events run smoothly. “She takes pride in making sure that our school runs seamlessly,” Burke added.
Susan Thacker – Leading by Example
Veteran fifth-grade teacher Susan Thacker of T.C. Martin Elementary School was recognized for her leadership and dedication to student success. Her classroom achieved significant growth in i-Ready math assessments, with many students exceeding their expected growth goals.
With over six years at Martin, Thacker has served as a team leader for the past three years, providing guidance and support to fellow educators. She played a key role in developing the school improvement plan and is known for her willingness to adopt new strategies for student benefit.
“Mrs. Thacker is a highly motivated teacher,” Principal Ethel Hosendorf said. “She comes prepared for instructional planning and engages in professional learning,” often arriving at school early to ensure her lessons are meticulously planned.
