Maryland’s unemployment rate held steady at 3.1 percent in December, maintaining its position as one of the lowest in the country, according to preliminary year-end employment data released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state saw an increase of 38,400 jobs in 2024, with 27,300 of those in the private sector, reflecting a 1.4 percent employment growth rate. December’s numbers showed a modest gain of 200 jobs statewide.

The labor force participation rate remained unchanged at 65.6 percent, significantly higher than the national average of 62.5 percent. Maryland’s jobless rate also continued to stay well below the national unemployment rate of 4.1 percent.

Several industries contributed to job growth in December. The public sector led all industries with an increase of 1,300 jobs. Retail trade followed closely, adding 1,000 positions, while the health care and social assistance sector expanded by 900 jobs. Professional, scientific, and technical services grew by 700 jobs, and both the finance and insurance sector and the information industry added 600 jobs each.

Some industries experienced job losses despite overall growth. The administrative and support and waste management and remediation sector recorded the most significant decline, losing 2,600 jobs. The other services sector shed 1,100 jobs, while transportation, warehousing, and utilities lost 600 positions. Private educational services declined by 500 jobs, and the construction industry saw a reduction of 400 jobs.
