Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland, is set to undergo significant renovations as part of a $50 million improvement plan aimed at enhancing the fan experience and addressing Major League Baseball (MLB) Player Development League (PDL) requirements. The project is a collaborative effort between the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA), and Attain Sports, owner of the Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

Opened in 1994, Prince George’s Stadium has been a fixture in the community for over 30 years, serving as a hub for professional baseball and family entertainment. The planned renovations align with a broader initiative by the State of Maryland, which in 2022 authorized MSA to issue up to $200 million for upgrades to sports and entertainment facilities statewide. The improvements at Prince George’s Stadium are designed to bring the facility up to modern standards while maintaining uninterrupted game schedules for the Chesapeake Baysox.

Attain Sports acquired the team, previously known as the Bowie Baysox, in 2021 and holds a lease for the stadium through 2032, with options to extend through 2042. The organization has worked alongside M-NCPPC and MSA to secure approval for the upgrades. The design-build team, led by Gilbane with EwingCole as the design partner, has been selected to execute the project, with Canopy Team assisting in the design process.

The renovation process will continue into early 2025, with construction expected to begin in March 2025 and extend into 2026. Officials have assured fans that the Chesapeake Baysox’s playing season will not be disrupted during the construction period.

In addition to the major structural upgrades, M-NCPPC and Attain Sports have announced the installation of two new state-of-the-art videoboards for the 2025 season. These videoboards will provide high-definition visuals, interactive content, and an enhanced game-day atmosphere for fans attending games and special events.

“Prince George’s Stadium has been a cherished gathering place for families, fans, and the community for over 30 years, and these renovations mark an exciting new chapter in its history,” said Peter A. Shapiro, Chair of the Prince George’s County Planning Board and M-NCPPC. “This project reflects our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents by delivering state-of-the-art amenities and preserving this beloved venue as a hub for sports, entertainment, and community pride. We are proud to work alongside our partners to ensure that Prince George’s Stadium continues to inspire and bring people together for generations to come.”

M-NCPPC Director Bill Tyler emphasized the project’s impact on both sports and recreation. “These renovations represent a significant investment in the future of Prince George’s Stadium and our community. Blending these modern innovations with the timeless tradition of baseball provides more opportunities for residents and visitors to Live More, Play More!”

Greg Baroni, CEO and Managing Partner of Attain Sports, echoed the enthusiasm for the stadium’s future. “We are thrilled to partner with M-NCPPC and MSA to deliver these much-needed improvements to Prince George’s Stadium,” he said. “This investment not only ensures that the Chesapeake Baysox have a world-class ballpark to call home, but also strengthens the stadium’s role as a centerpiece of family entertainment and economic growth in Bowie and the greater Chesapeake Bay region. With these planned upgrades, Prince George’s Stadium is poised to continue its legacy as a premier destination for fans and a cornerstone of the community.”
