Dr. Sonia Matthew, assistant principal at Mary B. Neal Elementary School in Charles County, has been named the 2025 Outstanding Assistant Principal by the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP) and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). She will be honored at the annual Assistant Principal & Aspiring Leader Conference on February 25.

Dr. Matthew has been recognized for her exceptional leadership in establishing and maintaining strong community partnerships, as well as creating collaborative programs that have enhanced the school’s culture. A National Board Certified Teacher, she has worked with the Maryland State Education Association to increase the number of National Board Certified Teachers across the state. Additionally, Dr. Matthew serves on the MAESP executive board and co-chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.

The MAESP/NAESP Outstanding Assistant Principal award honors assistant principals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, contribute to a positive educational environment, and are respected by students, colleagues, and the community. Nominees must be active assistant principals for at least two years, members of NAESP, and exhibit exceptional leadership in school programs or in addressing specific challenges within the school.

Dr. Matthew’s colleagues have praised her for having the “heart of a learner,” enabling her to effectively mentor teachers and staff. Her efforts have galvanized the school community, leading to improved culture throughout the building.
