Dunkirk, MD – Calvert County residents now have a new way to enjoy the outdoors with the opening of a 10-hole disc golf course at Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park. The course, which officially debuted in September 2024, was made possible through the dedication and hard work of two local volunteers, Matt Laur and his son Ryan, members of the Southern Maryland Disc Golf Association.
Disc golf is a rapidly growing sport that shares similarities with traditional golf. Instead of using clubs and balls, players throw specialized discs toward a series of elevated metal baskets. Each hole has a designated starting point, and players aim to complete the course in the fewest throws possible. The sport is enjoyed by all ages and skill levels, offering a fun and low-cost way to stay active.

Ward Farm Park’s disc golf course is one of the few wooded courses in the region, providing a scenic and challenging layout. Players will navigate tree-lined fairways and varying terrain, making for a unique and engaging experience. The course is free and open to the public, with maps available both on-site and online at calvertcountymd.gov/WardFarm.
Laur and his son spent more than 100 hours designing the course layout, selecting tee pads and baskets, assisting with signage, and working with park staff to ensure a well-structured and enjoyable course for the community. Their contributions helped transform the idea into a finished course that disc golf players can now enjoy year-round.
Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park is located at 10455 Ward Road in Dunkirk, Maryland. For more information on the new disc golf course and other park projects, visit calvertcountymd.gov/ParkProjects.
