St. Mary’s Ryken High School is proud to recognize two outstanding educators as the Archdiocese of Washington Teachers of the Year for 2024. Ms. Leanne Carr has been named Veteran Teacher of the Year, while Mr. Will Bolin has been honored as Novice Teacher of the Year for their dedication to the students of SMR.

Ms. Leanne Carr, the 2024 Veteran Teacher of the Year, has been a part of the St. Mary’s Ryken community for nearly 50 years. She began her teaching career at St. Mary’s Academy and continued at St. Mary’s Ryken when the two schools merged in 1981. Now in her 44th year as an American Government teacher, she has taught generations of students, including current principal Catherine Bowes and dean of academics Jason DeLucco.

Ms. Carr holds a bachelor’s degree in history from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and a master’s degree in leadership in teaching from Notre Dame of Maryland University. In recognition of her dedication, she recently received a citation from Governor Wes Moore. In addition to teaching American Government and AP Government, Ms. Carr has served as the moderator for SMR’s Mock Trial team, leading them to victory in the 7th Judicial Circuit Court Championship.

Mr. Will Bolin, the 2024 Novice Teacher of the Year, is being recognized for his work as a Theology teacher. Now in his third year at St. Mary’s Ryken, he previously served as a campus minister for the Archdiocese of Washington at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. His teaching approach encourages students to engage with ideas that affect them personally while building strong relationships with classmates. He fosters a collaborative learning environment where students take an active role in their education.

Mr. Bolin holds a master’s degree in pastoral theology from St. Joseph’s College of Maine and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from The Catholic University of America. His passion for teaching and commitment to student engagement make him a valued member of the SMR faculty.
