WALDORF, Md. — The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced that right-handed pitcher Cody Thompson will return for the 2025 season. After a strong 2024 campaign, Thompson re-signed with the team following a year in which he posted the third-best ERA among qualified pitchers on the staff.
In his first season with the Blue Crabs, Thompson became a key member of the bullpen. He finished the year with a 2-4 record and a 3.80 ERA over 40 appearances, striking out 69 batters in 66.1 innings. His 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings made him one of the most reliable late-game options for manager Stan Cliburn.

Thompson frequently pitched in high-pressure situations and was used for extended relief outings. He pitched two or more innings in 16 games last season. On June 15 against Charleston, he recorded his only save of the year, closing out a 3-1 win with three scoreless innings.
Manager Stan Cliburn praised Thompson’s impact on the team last season and expressed excitement about his return for another year. He noted that Thompson’s leadership in the bullpen and ability to perform in clutch moments made him a vital part of the pitching staff.
Before joining the Blue Crabs, Thompson played college baseball at Division III Randolph-Macon College before turning professional. He pitched in both the Pioneer and Frontier Leagues before making his Atlantic League debut with Southern Maryland in 2024. The Mechanicsville, Virginia, native will enter his sixth professional season and second with the Blue Crabs.
Thompson said he is eager to return to the team and continue competing in Southern Maryland. He credited the organization, fan base, and local community for making Waldorf a great place to play and is looking forward to another season.
Thompson is the first returning player from the 2024 roster and the third player signed to the 2025 team as the Blue Crabs continue shaping their roster for the upcoming season.
