WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Postal Service will introduce a redesigned money order in February 2025, enhancing security features to further combat counterfeiting and fraud. The new design, which includes a new bank routing number, will feature a red, white, and blue color scheme.

The transition to the updated money order will begin gradually, with the current design—referred to as the “legacy” money order—remaining in circulation until supplies are exhausted. Customers will be able to purchase either version at Post Office locations, and both will continue to be accepted as valid forms of payment at postal retail units and financial institutions.

Enhanced Security Features

The redesigned money order includes multiple security updates to prevent fraud. While not all details have been disclosed, the Postal Service has confirmed that the new design will feature watermarks, a security thread, and a Quick Response (QR) code linking to the USPS website for verification purposes. These updates aim to strengthen protections against counterfeit money orders while maintaining the Postal Service’s reputation for secure financial transactions.

Information on verifying money orders is available on the Sending Money Orders page at usps.com under the section “Receiving Money Orders — How to Spot a Fake.”
