Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at Jessup Correctional Institution after an autopsy ruled the case a homicide. Authorities have identified a suspect, but no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

The inmate, 61-year-old Warren Michael Griffin, was serving a 15-year sentence for a 2005 armed robbery in Anne Arundel County. On February 21, 2025, Maryland State Police homicide investigators were contacted by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit regarding Griffin’s death. He had been transported to the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where medical personnel pronounced him deceased.

Following an autopsy, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Griffin’s death was a homicide. Investigators have not disclosed details regarding the cause of death or whether prison staff were present during the incident.

A fellow inmate at Jessup has been identified as a suspect, but his name has not been released. Authorities have stated that charges are pending while they continue gathering evidence. The case remains under active investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, crime scene technicians, and investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

Jessup Correctional Institution, a maximum-security prison located in Anne Arundel County, houses more than 1,500 inmates. Incidents of violence have been reported at the facility in the past, and state officials continue to monitor conditions within Maryland’s correctional system.

The findings of the investigation will be presented to the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. If charges are filed, officials are expected to provide further details about the circumstances surrounding Griffin’s death.

Authorities have not indicated whether any prison staff members were involved or if security footage captured the incident. Investigators will review prison logs, interview witnesses, and examine forensic evidence before finalizing their report.

The Maryland State Police and the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services have not released any additional statements at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
