David Kauffman, a dedicated educator and lifelong musician, has been selected as the 2025 Maryland Music Education Association Hall of Fame inductee. As the Senior Manager of Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Apex Arts Magnet Program, Kauffman has made significant contributions to music education through his leadership, teaching, and mentorship.
The Hall of Fame award honors individuals who demonstrate excellence in teaching and administration, make meaningful contributions to music education, and advance the profession through dedicated service. Kauffman’s impact on students, teachers, and the broader music community has made him a standout candidate for this recognition.
With over 30 years in the field, Kauffman has held a variety of educational roles. He began his career as a teacher and band director before transitioning into leadership positions, including fine arts coordinator and assistant principal. In 2015, he was named Coordinator of Music for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, overseeing the development of music programs across the district. Since 2018, he has led the Apex Arts Magnet Program, refining its mission and enhancing instructional, performance, and presentation resources. His work has strengthened opportunities for young musicians and enriched the cultural fabric of the community.
Reflecting on his career, Kauffman expressed gratitude for the people and experiences that have shaped his journey in music education. He views this honor as a tribute to the many individuals who have influenced his work and the moments that have defined his professional life.
In addition to his role in Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Kauffman has contributed to music education at the collegiate and national levels. He has supervised teacher interns at Towson University and the University of Maryland Baltimore County and has served as director of the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Jazz Combo since 2021. His leadership extends beyond Maryland, as he currently serves as President-Elect of the Jazz Education Network, an international organization dedicated to advancing jazz education. He has been a member of the organization’s Board of Directors since 2019 and previously chaired the National Association for Music Education’s Council for Jazz Education from 2018 to 2022.
Kauffman’s induction into the Hall of Fame will take place on March 8 at the Maryland Music Education Association’s annual conference, where he will be formally recognized for his lasting impact on music education.
