SOLOMONS, Md. — The Calvert Marine Museum will host its annual OtterMania event on Saturday, March 29, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., celebrating its resident North American river otters, Chessie Grace and Calvert. The daylong festivities offer a mix of educational presentations, interactive activities, and otter-themed entertainment designed for visitors of all ages. Admission is free for museum members, with standard entry fees applying to non-members, available for purchase in advance at the museum’s official website.

This year’s event introduces a special story time featuring author Jennifer Keats Curtis, who will read from her children’s book, Saving Squeak. The story, centered on the rescue of a baby otter, aims to engage young attendees while highlighting conservation efforts. Curtis, a Maryland-based writer known for her wildlife-themed books, brings a fresh addition to the OtterMania lineup.

The museum has planned a robust schedule of activities to showcase the playful and intelligent nature of otters. Highlights include an aquarist talk, where staff will share insights into the care and behavior of Chessie Grace and Calvert, and otter feedings, offering a chance to observe the animals’ mealtime routines. Visitors can also explore hands-on learning stations themed around otter behaviors—eating, communicating, and more—designed to educate and entertain.

Middle school students from Mill Creek Middle School will present “Eat the Problem,” an eighth-grade project exploring the ecological impact of invasive species, a topic tied to the otters’ natural habitat. Additional family-friendly options include an otter craft station for creating keepsakes, a meet-and-greet with the museum’s otter mascot, and a group dance called “The Swim.” The Museum Store will feature otter-themed merchandise, such as t-shirts, plush toys, and puppets, alongside a “Guess How Many” game with a chance to win a prize.

Chessie Grace and Calvert, the stars of the event, have been part of the museum since their arrival as rescued otters. The Calvert Marine Museum, located along the Patuxent River, has long used these animals to educate the public about local wildlife and conservation. North American river otters, native to Maryland, are known for their agility and social behavior, making them a popular attraction.

OtterMania aligns with the museum’s mission to connect visitors with the region’s natural and cultural heritage. The event, now a tradition, draws families from across Southern Maryland and beyond, offering a blend of fun and learning. Organizers encourage attendees to arrive early, as some activities may have limited capacity.

Tickets purchased online ensure entry, with gates opening at 10 a.m. The museum, situated at 14200 Solomons Island Road, expects a steady crowd throughout the day. Parking is available on-site, and visitors are advised to check the museum’s website for updates closer to the event date. OtterMania promises a full day of engagement, spotlighting two of the museum’s most beloved residents.
