CLINTON, Md. — MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center reopened its renovated pre-operative surgery and post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) on March 10, 2025, after a $3 million project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the upgraded 4,000-square-foot space, designed to enhance patient care and staff efficiency.

The renovation replaced an outdated, segmented layout with an open, modern design. It includes 17 patient bays split between pre-op and PACU, two nurses’ stations, a breakroom, a dictation room, a workroom, and three restrooms—two for patients and one for staff. The setup improves patient flow, privacy, and comfort while supporting advanced medical equipment for pre-and post-surgical care.

David Weiner, MD, a spine surgeon at the hospital, emphasized the benefits. “For our nurses and providers, this is a game-changer. The improved layout will allow us to be more efficient and streamlined in the way we deliver care,” he said. “I’m most excited about what this means for our patients. This isn’t just about more space; it is about better care, smoother transitions, and a more comfortable experience.”

Stephen T. Michaels, MD, president of MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center and senior vice president of MedStar Health, linked the project to rising demand. “The much-needed renovation of the pre-operative surgical unit and PACU was driven by significant growth in surgical and procedural volumes at MedStar Southern Maryland over the past several years,” he said. “The updated space is an achievement that reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing patient care.”

The hospital, part of MedStar Health’s network of 10 facilities across Maryland and D.C., serves Clinton and surrounding areas. The flexible bay design meets increased surgical needs. Construction began in 2024, with the $3 million covering structural and technological upgrades. No further renovations were announced.
