CALIFORNIA, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that claimed the life of a 76-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon. The incident, which occurred on March 25, 2025, at approximately 1:15 p.m., unfolded in the 44000 block of St. Andrews Church Road and Pops Way, prompting a swift response from deputies.
Authorities report that a 2018 Hyundai Elantra veered off the roadway and collided with a concrete barrier. The driver, identified as Calvin Coolidge Edwards Jr. of Lexington Park, was discovered unresponsive and not breathing at the scene. Despite immediate life-saving measures by emergency personnel, Edwards was pronounced deceased.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office has taken charge of the investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that neither speed nor driver impairment contributed to the crash. Instead, investigators are exploring the possibility that a medical emergency may have precipitated the incident, though no definitive cause has been confirmed at this stage.
Deputy First Class Alexander Tasciotti, the lead investigator, is urging anyone who witnessed the crash or observed events leading up to it to come forward. Witnesses who have not yet provided a statement are asked to contact him at 301-475-2400, ext. 8151, or via email at Alexander.Tasciotti@stmaryscountymd.gov.
