LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) named Service Specialist Mark Turkaly the recipient of its quarterly “Heart. Science. Service. Award” on April 14, 2025, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the team and community. Turkaly’s dedication to helping others and ensuring tasks are completed to satisfaction earned him the accolade.

Turkaly’s commitment shines through in his willingness to take on extra responsibilities. He volunteers for community outreach efforts during his personal time, supporting initiatives that benefit St. Mary’s County residents. Additionally, his work on the SMCHD OSHA Safety Committee helps maintain a safe environment for staff. “There is no task too small for Mark because he feels it is important that the little things are taken care of,” the health department noted.

Reflecting on the honor, Turkaly said, “It’s gratifying to work for an organization that recognizes service as a core value, and very humbling to be awarded that honor. My father showed me we all have a place in this world, good work is its own reward and you should make time to smell the roses, life is short.” His approach embodies the award’s pillars of heart, science, and service.

The SMCHD, serving a county of approximately 114,000 residents, focuses on promoting public health through programs like disease prevention and community wellness. Turkaly’s efforts align with the department’s mission to enhance community health and safety, reflecting broader public health goals emphasized by organizations like the Maryland Department of Health.

The quarterly award highlights employees who go above and beyond, fostering a culture of excellence within the department. Turkaly’s recognition underscores the impact of individual contributions in strengthening public health services across St. Mary’s County.
