ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland baseball team (8-10) dominated Saint Elizabeth University (13-15) in a doubleheader on April 13, 2025, winning 5-1 in Game 1 and 12-2 in Game 2 at Hawk’s Nest Field. The sweep highlighted standout performances, including a record-breaking achievement by senior Cole Tarleton.

In Game 1, St. Mary’s took control early. Rhett Fletcher’s triple in the second inning set up a sacrifice fly RBI by Corey Brown, giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. George Berbakos tripled in the fourth, scoring on Trevor Smith’s sacrifice fly for a 2-0 edge. The fifth inning proved decisive, with Brown and Tarleton hitting triples to drive in two runs, followed by an unearned run for a 5-0 lead. Game 2 saw the Seahawks erupt offensively. Eli Shafer’s solo home run sparked a four-run first inning, with Berbakos adding an RBI double and Smith hitting a two-run homer for a 4-0 lead. After Saint Elizabeth scored in the second, St. Mary’s answered with five runs in the fourth, powered by Ian Walters’ solo homer and Tarleton’s three-run shot, making it 9-1. Tarleton added an RBI double in the sixth, and two more runs in the eighth sealed the 12-2 win.

Tarleton’s performance in Game 1 marked a historic milestone, as his second hit surpassed Tracy Vallandingham’s ’04 record of 149 hits, making him the program’s all-time hit leader. In Game 2, he led with four RBIs, including a three-run homer, and joined Berbakos and Walters with two hits each. Chalk’s complete game in Game 1 and Tommy Brill’s seven innings in Game 2, allowing two earned runs, anchored the pitching. Jordan Bonhoff pitched a scoreless eighth in Game 2.

The Seahawks’ offensive outburst included five triples in Game 1 and three home runs in Game 2, showcasing their depth. Berbakos contributed three hits in Game 1 and two in Game 2, while Walters and Shafer added power. St. Mary’s College, competing in the United East Conference, improved to 8-10 with the wins, building momentum for their next game.

Saint Elizabeth struggled to match St. Mary’s output, managing three runs across both games.

St. Mary’s next hosts Rosemont College on April 16 at 3 p.m. in St. Mary’s City, aiming to extend their winning streak.
