NANJEMOY, Md. — A single-story home at 2180 Sandy Point Road in Charles County was severely damaged by fire on April 15, 2025, displacing a family of six. The blaze, reported at 12:16 a.m., caused an estimated $125,000 in structural damage and $25,000 in contents loss, but all occupants escaped unharmed.

The Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department led the response, with 45 firefighters extinguishing the fire in 30 minutes after a single alarm. The fire originated on the rear deck, where investigators determined improperly discarded smoking materials accidentally sparked it.

Gerald and Cheri Grinder, the homeowners, four adults, and two children, safely evacuated after discovering the fire. Smoke alarms were present and functioning, though no fire alarms or sprinklers were installed.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family, providing temporary support. The National Fire Protection Association notes that smoking materials cause about 5% of U.S. home fires, with proper disposal being a key prevention measure.

The home, a single-family residence, sustained significant damage, primarily to the deck and adjacent areas, though the structure was not declared a total loss. No arrests were made, as the cause was ruled accidental.

The Grinders are coordinating with insurance providers to assess recovery options. Community members can support the family through Red Cross donations at https://www.redcross.org/donate. Charles County Emergency Services offers free smoke alarm checks at https://www.charlescountymd.gov/services/public-safety/fire-and-ems/smoke-alarms, noting that working alarms cut fire death risks by 50%, per NFPA data.
