FAULKNER, Md. — A devastating house fire in Faulkner claimed the lives of two Charles County residents early on April 17, 2025, as Deputy State Fire Marshals continue to investigate the blaze’s cause. The fire, which engulfed a two-story home at 9690 Brunswick Road, was reported at 6:15 a.m., prompting a rapid response from the Bel Alton Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding fire units.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the home fully consumed by flames. Reports indicated that the homeowners, 62-year-old Robert Bowling and 70-year-old Kim Dickens, were unaccounted for. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to severe hoarding conditions inside the residence, which complicated suppression efforts. It took approximately 50 firefighters two hours to bring the fire under control.

During the operation, Bowling and Dickens were located on the second floor, deceased. Their bodies were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause of death. A tenant residing on the first floor escaped unharmed, providing a small measure of relief amid the tragedy.

The fire caused extensive damage, with estimated losses of $175,000 to the structure and $75,000 to its contents. Smoke alarms were present in the home, but investigators have not yet confirmed whether they were operational at the time of the fire. The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation, with fire marshals working to uncover the circumstances that led to the deadly incident.

Hoarding conditions, as noted in this case, can significantly increase fire risks. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), excessive accumulation of materials can fuel fires, block exits, and hinder firefighting efforts. This tragedy underscores the dangers of such environments and the importance of fire safety measures like functioning smoke alarms.

The Charles County community has been shaken by the loss of Bowling and Dickens. The Bel Alton Volunteer Fire Department, supported by neighboring units, demonstrated considerable effort in battling the blaze under difficult conditions. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging residents to ensure their homes are equipped with working smoke detectors and to address potential fire hazards promptly.

Deputy State Fire Marshals are appealing for any information that could assist in determining the fire’s cause. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of house fires and the critical need for preparedness. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
