BOWIE, Md. — The Chesapeake Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and a favorite among Southern Maryland baseball fans, defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, 4-3 on April 17, 2025, at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia. The victory, the Baysox’s third in a row, improved their record to 8-4 and solidified their 5-2 mark in one-run games this season. Key offensive contributions in the fifth and eighth innings secured the win.

Chesapeake took an early lead in the first inning when Silas Ardoin singled in a run off Richmond starter John Michael Bertrand, marking Ardoin’s second consecutive game with an RBI. The Flying Squirrels (2-10) responded in the second and third innings against Baysox starter Zach Fruit, grabbing a 2-1 lead with an RBI double from Zach Morgan and a run by Jairo Pomares on a fielding error by Luis Valdez. Fruit pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks, exiting without a decision.

Adam Retzbach’s groundout drove in Wagner for the decisive run, Retzbach’s third RBI in four games. Preston Johnson (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Yaqui Rivera closed with a perfect ninth for his second save.

The team’s strong start in the Eastern League, where they compete in the Southwest Division, highlights their competitive edge. Players like Jackson and Rivera are key to their success, with the bullpen proving reliable in close contests.

The Baysox continue their six-game road trip against Richmond on April 18, 2025, at 6:35 p.m., with Trace Bright starting against Richmond’s Manuel Mercedes. Southern Maryland fans can follow via live streams or radio broadcasts on the Eastern League’s platforms.
