WASHINGTON – The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced on April 28, 2025, a groundbreaking enhancement to its my Social Security portal, allowing account holders to securely access their Social Security number (SSN) digitally. This innovative feature, set to launch in early summer 2025, offers a modern alternative to the traditional physical SSN card, streamlining access while prioritizing the protection of personal identifiable information (PII).

The digital SSN feature enables account holders to view their SSN online through the my Social Security portal, accessible via mobile devices, for purposes unrelated to Social Security matters. “We are proud to offer this new digital solution to our account holders,” said Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek. “This enhancement reflects our commitment to providing better service to the public while ensuring that their personal information remains secure.” The feature aims to reduce the need for in-person SSA visits or mailed replacement cards for those who forget their SSN or misplace their card.

This initiative addresses common inconveniences, such as lost or stolen cards, by providing a secure, convenient solution. “This digital feature not only streamlines the process for those who need their SSN but also reinforces our dedication to protecting sensitive information,” the SSA stated. By minimizing reliance on physical cards, the agency seeks to lower the risk of identity theft and enhance user experience for the 70 million Americans with my Social Security accounts.

The SSA’s commitment to safeguarding PII is central to the feature’s design. The digital SSN will be accessible only through the secure my Social Security portal, which requires multi-factor authentication. This ensures that sensitive information remains protected, aligning with the agency’s ongoing efforts to modernize service delivery. The feature complements existing online services, such as benefit verification and payment tracking, making the portal a one-stop hub for Social Security needs.

Starting in early summer 2025, account holders can use the digital SSN feature by logging into their my Social Security account. The SSA encourages users to create accounts at the designated portal to prepare for the launch. “Together, we are working to create a more accessible and secure future for all Social Security beneficiaries,” the agency noted, emphasizing its goal of improving public access while maintaining robust security measures.

The introduction of digital SSN access reflects broader SSA efforts to adapt to technological advancements. With over 200 million transactions processed annually through my Social Security, the portal has become a vital tool for beneficiaries. The new feature is expected to reduce wait times for SSN-related services, previously requiring office visits or mail delivery, and support the agency’s mission to serve a growing population efficiently.

As the SSA rolls out this enhancement, it anticipates significant public adoption, particularly among younger users accustomed to digital services. The agency’s focus on security and accessibility positions it to meet evolving needs while honoring its 90-year legacy of supporting Americans through retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.
