Louisville, Ky. – Sovereignty, a Godolphin homebred, surged past favored Journalism to capture the 151st Kentucky Derby on May 3, 2025, delivering Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum’s global operation its first victory in the $5 million Grade 1 race. Trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, the colt negotiated 1 1/4 miles on a sloppy Churchill Downs track in 2:02.31, returning $17.96 as a 7-1 chance. The win marked a historic milestone for Godolphin, trainer Mott, jockey Alvarado, and leading sire Into Mischief, who tied a record with his third Derby winner.

Sovereignty’s triumph followed a fast pace set by Citizen Bull, who led through fractions of :22.81 and :46.23. Neoequos pressed the leader, reaching six furlongs in 1:10.78, while Owen Almighty stalked and took the lead at the top of the stretch. Journalism, rolling into contention, overtook Owen Almighty, but Sovereignty, trailing closely, unleashed a powerful late charge. The victory was Mott’s second in the Kentucky Derby, following Country House’s 2019 win via disqualification. For Alvarado, who returned from injury in mid-April, it was his first Derby triumph. Into Mischief, sire of Authentic (2020) and Mandaloun (2021), became the fifth stallion to produce three Derby winners, matching Calumet’s Bull Lea. Godolphin also echoed Calumet’s feat by completing the Kentucky Oaks-Derby double, with homebred filly Good Cheer winning Friday’s Oaks. Earlier that day, Godolphin’s Ruling Court won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, capping a banner weekend.

Sovereignty, out of the Bernardini mare Crowned, boasts a pedigree tied to Sheikh Mohammed’s legacy. Bernardini, winner of the 2006 Preakness in Darley silks, is Sovereignty’s grandsire, adding poignancy to the colt’s victory in Godolphin’s royal blue. With a record of 6-3-2-0 and earnings of $3,672,800, Sovereignty broke his maiden in the 2024 Street Sense at Churchill Downs, won the Fountain of Youth, and placed second in the Florida Derby. The $3.1 million winner’s purse solidified his status as a top contender.

The race saw late scratches of Rodriguez and Grande, allowing also-eligible Baeza to enter. Citizen Bull faded to 16th, followed by American Promise, Render Jugment, Flying Mohawk, and Admire Daytona. Other finishers included Burnham Square, Sandman, East Avenue, Chunk of Gold, Tiztastic, Coal Battle, Luxor Cafe, Neoequos, and Publisher. The sloppy track, caused by rain, tested the field, but Sovereignty’s closing style suited the conditions.

Godolphin’s breakthrough ended decades of pursuit for the Kentucky Derby trophy, a goal Sheikh Mohammed prioritized since founding the operation. The win, coupled with successes in the Oaks and 2000 Guineas, underscored Godolphin’s global dominance. Mott’s strategic training and Alvarado’s patient ride maximized Sovereignty’s late-running ability, outpacing a competitive field.

The Kentucky Derby, America’s premier horse race, drew a capacity crowd at Churchill Downs, with fans braving wet conditions to witness history. Sovereignty’s victory positions him as a contender for the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, with Godolphin eyeing a Triple Crown bid.
