ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team secured its fourth consecutive United East Conference Tournament championship on May 3, 2025, defeating Bryn Athyn College 24-5. The top-seeded Seahawks (10-7) earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament. Their next opponent will be announced during the NCAA selection show on May 5 at 10:30 a.m. ET on NCAA.com.

Junior attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) was named Tournament MVP, contributing seven goals and six assists across the Seahawks’ 2-0 tournament run. Scala scored four goals in the championship game and added an assist, achieving a career-high 150th draw control. The Seahawks dominated draw controls 24-6 and outshot Bryn Athyn 33-10, showcasing their offensive and defensive prowess.

The game began with Bryn Athyn’s Kylie Scarpiello scoring an unassisted goal 2.5 minutes in. St. Mary’s responded with 16 unanswered goals, building a 16-1 lead by the 2:47 mark of the second quarter. Bryn Athyn’s Sabrina Brock scored before halftime, making it 16-2. In the third quarter, the teams traded goals, reaching 18-4 with 5:54 left. St. Mary’s closed with six consecutive goals, three from sophomore midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex Academy), to seal the 24-4 victory.

Scala and Elling each tallied four goals and one assist, with Elling setting career highs of five points and two ground balls. Seniors Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy), Ella Baynes (Baltimore, Md./Catholic HS), and Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each scored three goals, with Laine adding two assists for a career-best five points. Senior captain Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and sophomore defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) each secured six draw controls, with Horton contributing two assists and two goals, and Boudreau collecting three ground balls. Goalkeepers Isabel Gautreaux (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) and Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) split time, with Gautreaux making one save and Greeley recording three.

Bryn Athyn (8-5) saw five players score, with goalkeeper Chloe Munyon making five saves, grabbing one ground ball, and causing one turnover. Despite the loss, the Lions competed closely in ground balls, trailing 10-7, and matched St. Mary’s with three free-position goals.

St. Mary’s College’s dominance in the United East Conference reflects its consistent preparation and depth. The team’s balanced scoring, with five players achieving at least three goals, and their control of draws underscored their strategic execution. The Seahawks now turn their focus to the NCAA Tournament, with the first round scheduled for May 10 against an opponent to be determined.

The victory continues St. Mary’s strong lacrosse tradition, having won every United East title since 2022. The program’s success is built on a foundation of experienced seniors and emerging talents like Scala and Elling, who have stepped into leadership roles. As they await their NCAA matchup, the Seahawks aim to carry their momentum into the national stage, where they last competed in 2024.
