EDWARDSVILLE, Pa., — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland baseball team concluded its 2025 season with an 11-2 defeat to the Cairn Highlanders in the second game of the United East Conference Final Four on Sunday, May 11. The Seahawks, finishing with a 13-16 record, were unable to overcome an early deficit against the 28-15 Highlanders.

Cairn took control early, scoring three runs across the first two innings. The Seahawks responded in the third when Eli Shafer doubled, driving in Aaron Wathen from third to make it 3-1. However, Cairn extended their lead with two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth, pushing the score to 7-1.

The Highlanders sealed the game with a four-run ninth inning. St. Mary’s added a final run in the bottom of the ninth when Corey Brown’s fielder’s choice allowed Trevor Smith to score from third, but the Seahawks could not close the gap, falling 11-2.

Ian Walters led the Seahawks’ offense with three hits. Shafer and Brown each contributed an RBI. On the mound, Jordan Bonhoff started, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing five earned runs with one strikeout. Tommy Brill threw 3.2 innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out one. Erik Thomas pitched 1.1 innings, surrendering two earned runs.

Cairn’s consistent scoring and late surge proved decisive, as they capitalized on opportunities to build an insurmountable lead. The Seahawks’ offense struggled to generate momentum, managing only two runs despite Walters’ multi-hit performance. The pitching staff, led by Brill’s scoreless relief, kept the game competitive through the middle innings, but Cairn’s offensive output overwhelmed St. Mary’s.

The game marked the end of St. Mary’s 2025 campaign, which saw the team achieve a 13-16 record and earn a spot in the United East Conference Final Four. The Seahawks showed resilience throughout the season, with key contributions from players like Walters, Shafer, and Brown. The pitching trio of Bonhoff, Brill, and Thomas provided stability, though they faced a potent Cairn lineup in the tournament.

The United East Conference Final Four appearance highlighted St. Mary’s competitive spirit, building on their regular-season efforts. While the loss to Cairn ended their championship hopes, the Seahawks’ season showcased individual growth and team potential for future campaigns.
