ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — Five members of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland sailing team earned All-Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) honors, announced April 20, 2025, following the America Trophy, the MAISA Open Fleet Race Conference Championship hosted by Cornell University. The awards recognize the Seahawks’ standout performances in a competitive season, highlighted by strong showings at both the Prosser Trophy and America Trophy.

Senior Owen Hennessey, from Washington, D.C., was a finalist for MAISA Open Sailor of the Year and Sportsman of the Year for the second consecutive season. Senior captain Zoë Hoctor, from Annapolis, Maryland, was a finalist for MAISA Crew of the Year, also for the second straight year. Hennessey and sophomore Landon Cormie, from Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, secured First Team All-MAISA honors as skippers, while senior captain Charlie Anderson, from West River, Maryland, earned Second Team honors. Senior captain Hoctor and junior captain Emily Shioutakon, from Rockville, Maryland, claimed First Team All-MAISA at crew.

Hennessey’s fourth consecutive All-MAISA honor, including his third straight First Team selection, underscores his consistency. Cormie’s First Team nod marks his first career all-conference award, while Anderson, a two-time Second Team pick, continues to contribute significantly. Hoctor, wrapping up her Seahawk career, earned her second First Team selection, and Shioutakon received her first.

The honored sailors powered St. Mary’s to a third-place finish at the Prosser Trophy, the MAISA Open Team Race Championship, on April 5-6, 2025, with a 5-2 record. At the America Trophy, the Seahawks placed fourth with 118 points, narrowly missing the podium by three points. Hennessey, Hoctor, and senior crew Brooke Bertrand, from Costa Mesa, California, took third in Division A, while Anderson, Cormie, Shioutakon, crew Henry Haddon, from Bethesda, Maryland, and Jane Wright, from Wilmington, North Carolina, finished fifth in Division B.

The team’s success reflects their skill and preparation, positioning them well for upcoming national competitions. St. Mary’s College will host and compete in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women’s Fleet Race Championship from May 20-23, 2025, and the ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship from May 27-30, 2025. The Seahawks are seeded 20th for the women’s event and 12th for the open championship, setting the stage for a strong showing on home waters.

Located along the St. Mary’s River, the college’s waterfront campus provides an ideal setting for hosting these prestigious events. The team’s recent accolades and competitive finishes demonstrate their readiness to face top programs nationwide. The MAISA awards highlight individual and collective excellence, with Hennessey, Hoctor, Cormie, Anderson, and Shioutakon leading the charge for St. Mary’s.
