LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A fatal head-on collision on Point Lookout Road (MD Route 5) near St. Margarets Drive claimed one life and injured another on May 21, 2025, at approximately 7:17 a.m., according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. The crash, involving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2011 Ford Econoline van, prompted an extended road closure and a detailed investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Preliminary findings indicate that the Silverado, driven by Charles Latham, 48, of Lexington Park, was traveling northbound when it crossed the center line for unknown reasons, striking the southbound van head-on. The van’s driver, whose identity is withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene. Latham was airlifted by Maryland State Police Trooper 7 to a regional trauma center for treatment. Authorities believe a medical emergency may have contributed to the collision.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that emergency responders found one individual trapped in the wreckage, requiring extrication completed around 8:10 a.m. A landing zone for the medevac helicopter was established at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds. The severity of the crash led to significant delays, with the Sheriff’s Office advising motorists to avoid the area for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

Witnesses who have not yet provided statements are urged to contact Cpl. Rachael Owens at 301-475-4200, ext. 8108, or via email at rachael.owens@stmaryscountymd.gov. The investigation remains ongoing as the Collision Reconstruction Unit works to determine the precise circumstances of the crash.
