PENSACOLA, Fla., May 28, 2025 — Ensign Keirra Harvey, a Waldorf, Maryland, native, is serving as a student at the Naval Aviation Schools Command (NASC) at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, where she is developing skills to become a combat-ready aviation professional. Harvey, who joined the U.S. Navy less than a year ago, is among sailors, Marines, and guardsmen training to meet the demands of naval aviation.

“I joined the Navy because I wanted to serve my country in a meaningful, real-time way,” Harvey said. “I wanted to turn the discipline and resiliency I learned growing up into a purposeful career and lifestyle.”

Harvey, a 2013 graduate of Bacon Academy, brings lessons from her southern Maryland upbringing to her naval service. “Growing up in southern Maryland, I learned the value of humility, hard work and staying grounded,” Harvey said. “All of those lessons stayed with me in the Navy and remind me to lead with integrity, never take opportunities for granted and to always carry the strength of where I came from into new challenges.”

Located at Naval Air Station Pensacola, NASC provides technical training, character development, and professional leadership education to prepare Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and partner nation officers and enlisted students for aviation roles. The command includes four schoolhouses: Aviation Training School (ATS), Aviation Enlisted Aircrew Training (AEATS), Aviation Rescue Swimmer School (ARSS), and Aviation Water Survival School (AWS). These schools offer curricula covering aviation training, aircrew duties, survival, first aid, and water rescue procedures, ensuring graduates are ready to serve as high-quality aviation personnel.

As the U.S. Navy marks its 250th birthday in 2025, officials emphasize its role in national security and global commerce. “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’s Warfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom,” Navy officials said. With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and internet access relying on secure undersea cables, the Navy underscores the importance of recruiting talented individuals like Harvey to maintain operational readiness.

Harvey’s path to NASC included significant milestones. “My proudest accomplishment is receiving my commission from Officer Training Command Newport,” Harvey said. “It was a struggle getting through the preparatory part of the commission.” Her service reflects a commitment to leadership and growth. “Serving in the Navy means leading with empathy, integrity and discipline for your sailors,” Harvey said. “It means maintaining a growth mindset by being accountable and dependable.”

Before joining the Navy, Harvey earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from St. John’s University, Tobin College of Business, in 2019. She also worked as a civilian employee at the Navy International Programs Office (NIPO) in Washington, D.C. Her transition to active-duty service reflects her desire to contribute directly to national defense.

Harvey credits her family for her success. “I would like to thank my mom, aunt and grandparents for their unwavering, consistent love and support,” Harvey said. “They have built me into who I am today.”

NASC’s training programs are designed to produce aviation professionals capable of meeting the Navy’s global demands. The command’s focus on technical and leadership skills ensures students like Harvey are prepared for the challenges of naval aviation. As she progresses in her training, Harvey remains committed to embodying the values of her hometown and the Navy’s mission.

The Navy’s presence in Pensacola, a hub for aviation training, underscores its investment in developing skilled personnel. NASC’s role in preparing officers and enlisted members for aviation duties supports the Navy’s broader objectives of maintaining maritime security and promoting national prosperity. Harvey’s service at NASC is part of this legacy, as she works to become a combat-ready aviation professional.
