LOTHIAN, Md., June 12, 2025 — Chelsea McDonald, a fourth-grade teacher at Lothian Elementary School, has been named the 2025 Elementary School Outstanding Mathematics Educator by the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). McDonald, in her 11th year with Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), is the first county teacher to receive this honor since 2020, recognizing her exceptional work in fostering a love for math among her students.
“I’m truly honored to receive this state recognition,” said McDonald, who has spent her entire AACPS career at Lothian. “Teaching elementary mathematics is not just about numbers, it’s about helping students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and discover the joy of learning. I’m grateful to work with my incredible colleagues, students and school community who inspire me every day.”
The MCTM award celebrates elementary math teachers who demonstrate excellence through research-informed practices and have at least three years of classroom experience. McDonald’s innovative approach to mathematics education emphasizes building students’ confidence and problem-solving abilities, creating an engaging and supportive learning environment. McDonald will be formally honored at MCTM’s annual conference in fall 2025, where she will receive her award. The event brings together educators across Maryland to share best practices and advance mathematics education. As the first AACPS teacher to earn this distinction in five years, McDonald’s achievement underscores the strength of the county’s educators and their commitment to student success.
