LEONARDTOWN, Md.,— The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) will implement a new Environmental Health fee schedule and transfer perc test application processing to its Division of Environmental Health, both effective July 1, 2025. The changes aim to streamline services for residents and businesses in St. Mary’s County.

The updated fee schedule, covering services like well permits, septic system inspections, and food facility licenses, will take effect July 1. Residents can view the approved fees at smchd.org or request a copy by emailing smchd.env@maryland.gov. The health department has not specified the extent of fee changes but encourages residents to review the schedule for updated costs.

Starting July 1, SMCHD will handle perc test applications and payments, a process previously managed by the St. Mary’s County Department of Land Use and Growth Management. Perc tests, which assess soil suitability for septic systems, are critical for property development and home construction. The shift centralizes environmental health services under SMCHD, potentially improving efficiency for applicants.
