ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 25, 2025 — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has launched MD Outdoors, a new online licensing system for residents and visitors to purchase hunting and fishing licenses, associated stamps and permits, and manage boat and off-road vehicle registration renewals. The platform, which replaces the former COMPASS system, aims to streamline access to outdoor recreational services.
MD Outdoors offers a user-friendly interface, replacing the outdated COMPASS portal with a one-stop shop for licensing needs. Current license-holders will retain their existing DNR ID numbers and can access their accounts by creating a new username and password. The website provides clear instructions for account setup and retrieval of customer information.
The system introduces several modern features, including auto-renew options for licenses and registrations, a simplified navigation structure, and a mobile app that stores license details. The app also helps users discover new hunting and fishing opportunities across Maryland. DNR plans to expand the platform’s capabilities in the future, though specific updates have not been detailed.
Developed in collaboration with Brandt Information Services, a leader in hunting and fishing licensing technology, MD Outdoors was funded by the Maryland Department of Information Technology through its Major IT Development Project Oversight Division. The project incurred no additional cost to taxpayers, maintaining the same operational expenses as the COMPASS system.
Licensing fees for hunting and fishing remain unchanged, as they are set by the Maryland General Assembly. MD Outdoors does not alter these costs but focuses on improving accessibility and user experience. More details about the platform, including account setup and available services, are accessible on the MD Outdoors website.
The transition to MD Outdoors reflects DNR’s commitment to modernizing its services. The new system prioritizes convenience, allowing users to manage their licenses and registrations from any device. The mobile app, in particular, caters to on-the-go users, providing instant access to license information and location-based recreational opportunities.
Brandt Information Services, based in Tallahassee, Florida, has a track record of delivering licensing solutions for state agencies. Their expertise ensured a seamless integration of features tailored to Maryland’s needs. The project’s funding through the Department of Information Technology underscores Maryland’s investment in efficient, user-focused technology.
DNR encourages all users to explore MD Outdoors and set up their accounts. The platform’s design accommodates both new customers and long-time license-holders, with step-by-step guidance for navigating the system. As Maryland continues to promote outdoor recreation, MD Outdoors serves as a critical tool for ensuring compliance with licensing requirements.
The launch of MD Outdoors comes as part of broader efforts to enhance public access to Maryland’s natural resources. With over 500,000 hunting and fishing licenses issued annually, the state aims to make the process more efficient while maintaining affordability. The system’s development aligns with Maryland’s goal of supporting sustainable outdoor activities.
For additional support, users can contact DNR’s customer service team through the MD Outdoors website. The platform is expected to evolve with user feedback, ensuring it meets the needs of Maryland’s outdoor enthusiasts.
