Our Spotlight on the Arts shines brightly on multi-talented local artist, Brittany Chanell Johnson!
Share some highlights of your work as an artist!

I’ve had the joy of performing across genres—from musical theatre and opera to gospel and contemporary concert work. Some of my proudest moments include conducting the legendary Stephanie Mills in Black Broadway on PBS, music directing the first all-Black production of Pippin at Howard University and singing background vocals for the iconic Dionne Warwick.
I’ve also had the honor of developing new, never-before-seen musicals and guiding emerging artists through that creative process. As an educator and workshop facilitator, I specialize in inclusive vocal pedagogy, helping singers across genres find their authentic voice—especially through my work in college classrooms, national masterclasses, and community-based programs.
I am proud of all my students and relish when they book roles in regional and international theatre/concert works, on National tours, and on Broadway
How long have you been involved in your art form(s)?
I’ve been singing and performing since childhood but began formal training over two decades ago. Professionally, I’ve worked as a singer, educator, and conductor for more than 15 years.

What brought you to St. Mary’s County?
I accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Music at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, excited by the opportunity to build meaningful programs in vocal and choral music, as well as musical theatre. The chance to foster community through music, combined with the county’s natural beauty and creative energy, made it feel like the perfect place to come.
Do you have any projects in the works?
Yes! I’m currently developing a choral festival for high school students in Southern Maryland, preparing for a 2026 national conference presentation, and continuing creative collaborations that uplift underrepresented voices. This August, I’ll be performing as Sofia in The Color Purple with ArtsCentric in Baltimore, MD. Visit www.artscentric.org for tickets and details!
What are your other interests outside of your art form?
Outside of music, I enjoy cooking and baking, taking dance fitness and line-dancing classes, and spending time with loved ones. I’m also passionate about mental wellness, spirituality, and curating a joy-filled life.
