RICHMOND, Va. — The Chesapeake Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, split a doubleheader against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, on July 1 and July 2, 2025, at The Diamond. The Flying Squirrels won the first game 6-4, while the Baysox secured a 3-0 shutout in the second game, which lasted seven innings.
In the first game on July 1, the Chesapeake Baysox struck first with a solo home run by center fielder Reed Trimble in the first inning off Flying Squirrels starter Keaton Choate. The Flying Squirrels answered with two runs in the third, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh. The Baysox rallied late, scoring three runs in the eighth inning via a two-run double from catcher Noah Willems and a single by designated hitter Silas Ardoin. Flying Squirrels reliever Tyler Myrick closed out the 6-4 win with his fifth save.
Trimble led the Baysox, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and an RBI. Left fielder Andrew Velásquez and Willems each had two hits, with Velásquez scoring and Willems driving in two runs. Baysox starter Zane German pitched two scoreless innings, but reliever Ronald Alcantara took the loss, allowing three runs over 2.1 innings. For the Flying Squirrels, shortstop Luis Arteaga went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and first baseman Diego Bericoto drove in two runs. Starter Nick Sinacola earned the win with three scoreless innings.
On July 2, the Chesapeake Baysox shut out the Flying Squirrels 3-0, led by a complete-game effort from pitcher Trey Gibson. Gibson, ranked the No. 10 prospect in the Orioles’ system by Baseball America, allowed one hit and struck out six over seven innings. The Baysox scored all three runs in the fourth inning, with Ardoin delivering an RBI single and third baseman Carter Young adding an RBI single. Center fielder Enrique Bradfield Jr. scored after reaching base and stealing second.
First baseman Adam Retzbach paced the Baysox with two hits, including a double, while Bradfield and Young each had two hits. Flying Squirrels starter Joe Lonsway took the loss, allowing three runs over five innings. Richmond managed just one hit, a single by right fielder Bericoto, and stranded two runners. The second game, played under partly cloudy skies with 5,225 fans present, concluded in 1 hour and 57 minutes.
The doubleheader was part of a three-game series between the Chesapeake Baysox (33-42, fifth in Eastern League Southwest) and the Flying Squirrels (24-51, sixth in Eastern League Southwest) from July 1-3 at The Diamond. The teams are scheduled to meet again July 4-6 at Prince George’s Stadium, home of the Baysox. The Baysox committed three errors across the two games, while the Flying Squirrels played error-free in the second game.
Gibson’s shutout marked his first complete game of 2025, a standout moment for the Baysox pitching staff. The team struggled with runners in scoring position, going 2-for-11 in game one and 2-for-8 in game two, but clutch hits in the second game sealed the victory. The Flying Squirrels capitalized on two-out RBIs and a stolen base in game one but were stifled by Gibson’s dominance in game two.
The Eastern League, governed by Major League Baseball, features mostly six-game series, with this three-game set an exception. The Chesapeake Baysox and Flying Squirrels compete in the Southwest Division alongside teams like the Akron RubberDucks and Harrisburg Senators. The split reflects the division’s tight competition, with both teams showcasing prospects critical to their parent clubs’ development pipelines.
