Historic St. Mary’s City, a cornerstone of Southern Maryland’s cultural and historical landscape, will see a change in leadership as Executive Director Dr. John Seidel steps down effective August 1, 2025, to focus on his wife Liz’s health challenges. The announcement, made on July 25, 2025, marks the end of Seidel’s impactful tenure at the living history museum, which preserves Maryland’s first capital.
“This is not a decision I ever wanted to make,” said Dr. Seidel. “But family and health must sometimes come first. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to serve this extraordinary institution and to work alongside such dedicated staff, Commissioners, and supporters.” Seidel’s departure comes after two years of transformative leadership at Historic St. Mary’s City.
Seidel’s Tenure and Achievements
Since assuming the role of executive director in 2023, Dr. Seidel has guided Historic St. Mary’s City through a period of revitalization. His leadership strengthened community partnerships, secured critical funding, and laid groundwork for the museum’s future, particularly as it approaches the 400th anniversary of Maryland’s founding in 2034. These efforts have positioned Historic St. Mary’s City as a vibrant hub for education and historical preservation in Southern Maryland.
Seidel’s vision emphasized accessibility and engagement, ensuring the museum remained a vital resource for residents and visitors alike. His work has left a lasting imprint on Historic St. Mary’s City, fostering growth while honoring its mission to preserve Maryland’s colonial heritage.
Transition to Interim Leadership
Dr. Travis Parno, Historic St. Mary’s City’s Director of Research and Collections, will step into the role of Interim Executive Director while a national search for a permanent replacement is conducted. Parno, who has previously served in this capacity, brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of the museum’s operations. His appointment ensures continuity as Historic St. Mary’s City navigates this transition.
“John has been an outstanding steward of Historic St. Mary’s City,” said Tim Heely, Chair of the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission. “His steady hand, vision, and integrity have made a lasting impact, and he leaves with the full support and appreciation of the Commissioners. We respect his decision and thank him deeply for his service.”
Continued Commitment and Future Plans
Though stepping down, Dr. Seidel remains committed to Historic St. Mary’s City’s mission. “I’ll continue to support HSMC however I can — in fundraising, advocacy, or just as someone who cares deeply about its future,” he said. His ongoing dedication reflects the deep connection he has forged with the institution and its role in Southern Maryland.
Historic St. Mary’s City, located in St. Mary’s County, is a key cultural asset, offering immersive experiences that bring Maryland’s colonial history to life. As the museum prepares for its next chapter, Parno’s interim leadership and the commission’s support ensure its mission remains strong.
