On the evening of July 26, 2025, a devastating head-on collision occurred on Maryland Route 6, known locally as Charles Street, in the 9900 block in La Plata. At approximately 7:19 p.m., La Plata Police Department and Charles County Sheriff’s Office officers responded to reports of a severe motor vehicle accident involving trapped occupants. Emergency medical services and La Plata Volunteer Fire Department personnel also arrived promptly to assist.
The La Plata fatal crash involved a white 2021 Infiniti SUV, driven by Cory Jermaine Kane, a 46-year-old male from District Heights, Maryland, and a black 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis carrying three female occupants. Preliminary investigations by the La Plata Police Department indicate that Kane was traveling eastbound when his vehicle crossed the center line, striking the westbound Mercury Marquis head-on. Authorities have identified speed and alcohol as contributing factors in the La Plata fatal crash.
Tragic Outcome for Victims
The collision resulted in the immediate deaths of two occupants in the Mercury Marquis: a 29-year-old woman from Washington, D.C., and a 31-year-old woman from Seat Pleasant, Maryland. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene and remained trapped in the vehicle until emergency personnel could address the wreckage. A third occupant, a 31-year-old woman from Washington, D.C., was successfully extricated by La Plata Volunteer Fire Department and Charles County Department of Emergency Services personnel. She was airlifted by Maryland State Police Trooper 2 to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, where she is listed in stable condition. The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Suspect in Custody
Cory Jermaine Kane, the driver of the Infiniti SUV, refused medical treatment at the scene. Officers from the La Plata Police Department took him into custody following the La Plata fatal crash. The investigation into his actions, particularly the roles of speed and alcohol, is ongoing. Authorities are working to determine the full circumstances that led to the vehicle crossing the center line, causing the deadly collision.
