Our Spotlight on the Arts for August 2025 shines brightly on Brian Haislip, the founder of Full Frame Foundation and its Southern Maryland chapter, SoMD Photography

How long have you been involved with photography?

What began as a casual hobby eight years ago, quickly evolved into a passion that opened the door to creative expression and purposeful connection. Photography became a powerful tool for bringing people together, telling meaningful stories, and breaking down social and physical barriers while helping others see their own potential through the lens.

Tell us more about the SoMD Photography group!

SoMD Photography began as a small Facebook group where local photographers and community members could safely share their work and connect with others. Over time, it grew into a vibrant and supportive community focused on collaboration, creativity, and community service.

The organization brings together photographers of all skill levels from across Southern Maryland to learn from one another, display their work, and use photography to make a difference. Whether through gallery events, educational programs, or community partnerships, SoMD Photography is about using our shared passion to uplift others and create meaningful impact.

Do you have a favorite aspect of your art form?

I’m drawn to the technical challenge and creative beauty of capturing light in motion. I especially love light painting, photographing fireworks, chasing storms, and capturing the night sky. There’s something powerful about freezing a moment that only exists for a fraction of a second. Beyond the technical side, I love how photography can build confidence, spark curiosity, and connect people in ways that words sometimes can’t.

What are your other interests outside of photography?

I work as an IT Specialist for St. Mary’s County Public Schools, which gives me a strong foundation in technology and problem solving. I also enjoy finding creative ways to bring people together through community building and event planning. Whether it’s through mentorship or supporting local causes, I’m always looking for opportunities to make a positive impact.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

One of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been founding Full Frame Foundation and SoMD Photography. These efforts are rooted in a shared mission: to use photography as a tool for community connection, empowerment, and growth. Helping people see the value in their creativity and in themselves has been the most rewarding part of these efforts.

“Photography is how I share the beauty I cannot explain with words.” – Brian Haislip
