Eric Colvin, a Republican serving his second term as St. Mary’s County Commissioner for District 1, has officially filed for re-election, aiming to continue representing the region in the 2026 election.
District 1 encompasses the southern portion of Leonardtown, Point Lookout, Valley Lee, Tall Timbers, Ridge, and part of Lexington Park. While St. Mary’s County commissioners must reside in their respective districts, they represent the entire county, and all voters can cast ballots for each commissioner seat. Colvin’s announcement signals his commitment to furthering the priorities that have defined his tenure.
As a St. Mary’s County Commissioner, Colvin has built a reputation for fiscal conservatism and meticulous budget oversight. His focus includes bolstering public safety, supporting first responders, and addressing infrastructure needs, such as expanding broadband internet access across St. Mary’s County’s rural and growing areas. Colvin has also championed transparency in local government, ensuring residents have clear insight into county operations. His leadership extends beyond Southern Maryland, with active roles in the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) and the National Association of Counties (NACo). Currently, he serves as Vice-Chair of NACo’s IT Standing Committee and a member of its Resilient Counties Advisory Board, showcasing his expertise in technology and county resilience.
“Serving as a county commissioner has been one of the highest honors of my life,” Colvin said. “Being elected to represent our residents is really about service; this is not a job I take lightly. If chosen to represent the people of St. Mary’s County for a third term, voters can feel confident that I will continue to do the hard work. I want St. Mary’s County to continue to be a wonderful place to live, work, raise a family, and enjoy life.” His words reflect a dedication to maintaining the quality of life for the county’s roughly 113,000 residents.
Colvin’s qualifications include his completion of the MACo Academy for Excellence in Good Governance, a program designed to enhance leadership skills for county officials. His experience and regional involvement position him as a seasoned St. Mary’s County Commissioner, particularly for District 1’s diverse communities, from historic Point Lookout to the growing Lexington Park area near Naval Air Station Patuxent River.
The primary election is set for June 23, 2026, with early voting available from June 11 through June 18.
