On August 1, 2025, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources introduced the MD Outdoors app, a free mobile application designed to serve as the official resource for Southern Maryland’s outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, and anglers. This new app replaces the outdated AccessDNR app, which will no longer be supported, requiring users to uninstall the old version and download the MD Outdoors app from the DNR website. The launch aligns with the department’s upgraded licensing system, which went live in June, streamlining access to essential services for residents and visitors alike.

The MD Outdoors app offers a comprehensive suite of tools tailored to Southern Maryland’s outdoor community. Users can purchase hunting and fishing licenses, associated stamps, and permits directly through the app, as well as renew boat and off-road vehicle registrations. The app also allows users to display their licenses and registrations digitally, providing convenient access during outdoor activities. This functionality is particularly valuable for anglers fishing the Potomac River or hunters exploring the region’s Wildlife Management Areas, such as those in Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert counties.

Beyond licensing, the MD Outdoors app includes practical features to enhance outdoor experiences. It provides maps and directions to Maryland State Parks, trails, boat launches, and water access sites, making it easier for Southern Maryland residents to navigate local gems like Point Lookout State Park or the Patuxent River. The app details activities and amenities at state parks, ensuring users can plan visits based on available facilities. For hunters, the app offers season dates, regulation guides, and a harvest reporting tool, simplifying compliance with state requirements. Anglers benefit from tide tables, a fish and shellfish identifier, and state fish record information, which are especially useful for those fishing in Chesapeake Bay waters.

The MD Outdoors app also includes a location-based sunrise/sunset display, aiding hunters and anglers in timing their activities. With over 253,000 downloads of DNR’s mobile apps since their inception, the department expects strong adoption of this upgraded platform, developed with Brandt Information Services to offer an intuitive interface and auto-renewal options. Future updates will introduce additional features, further enhancing its utility for Southern Maryland’s outdoor community.

Users of the former AccessDNR app should note that photos in the “Trophy Case” section will not transfer to the MD Outdoors app. The DNR advises saving these images to personal devices before the old app is discontinued. The shift to the MD Outdoors app reflects the department’s commitment to improving customer service, with funding from the Maryland Department of Information Technology ensuring no additional cost to taxpayers.

For Southern Maryland residents, the MD Outdoors app is a vital tool for accessing the region’s rich natural resources. From the shores of the Chesapeake Bay to the trails of Greenwell State Park, the app connects users to the outdoors while simplifying licensing and planning. As the DNR continues to refine this platform, it promises to be an essential companion for exploring Maryland’s natural beauty.
