St. Mary’s City, Md. – Sophomore goalkeeper Kyleigh Bland of Arnold, Md., has been named the United East Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career, as announced by the league office on September 8, 2025. This marks the second consecutive week that a St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer player has earned this honor, following senior defender Ashlyn Bonner’s selection on September 1. Bland, a Broadneck High School alum, delivered standout performances in goal during a demanding week for the Seahawks, who posted a 1-1-1 record with two shutouts.
Bland’s week began with a 1-0 road victory over Hood College on September 3, where she made three saves to secure a clean sheet. She then faced a formidable challenge at the Salisbury University Classic, stopping a season-high eight shots in a scoreless draw against No. 2-ranked William Smith College on September 6. Despite a 4-0 loss to Rowan University, a team receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Division III preseason poll, on September 7, Bland denied six shots, showcasing her resilience. Her performances contributed to two of the team’s three shutouts this season, highlighting her pivotal role in the Seahawks’ defensive efforts.

Currently, Bland leads the United East Conference with three shutouts, ranks third with a 1.02 goals-against average, and sits fifth with an .848 save percentage. These metrics underscore her consistency and skill in goal, making her a key asset for St. Mary’s College as they navigate a competitive season. The Seahawks, holding a 2-1-2 record, are preparing for their next match, a non-conference clash against Stevenson University (1-1-1) in Owings Mills, Md., on September 10 at 5 p.m.
The United East Conference has recognized St. Mary’s defensive prowess early this season, with Bland’s award following Bonner’s nod the previous week. Bland’s ability to perform against top-tier opponents like William Smith and Rowan demonstrates her growing impact as a sophomore. Her prior experience, including her first career Defensive Player of the Week award, has evidently prepared her for high-pressure situations, as evidenced by her 17 saves across three games last week.
As St. Mary’s College continues its season, Bland’s contributions in goal will be critical. The team’s defensive record, bolstered by her league-leading shutouts, positions them well for upcoming matches. Fans and teammates alike will look to Bland to maintain her form as the Seahawks aim to build on their early-season momentum against Stevenson and beyond.
