St. Mary’s City, MD — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team, with a record of 2-1-2, lost 4-0 to undefeated Rowan University (3-0) on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Soccer Stadium. The match marked the Seahawks’ first defeat of the season, with Rowan asserting dominance throughout.

The Profs scored their first goal in the 21st minute, assisted by Lianna SanFelice and Renata Cicala to Sara Wiedeman. They added a second goal 10 minutes later when Sophia Saladino found the net, leading 2-0 at halftime. Senior goalkeeper Kyleigh Bland from Mechanicsville made four saves in the first half, keeping the scoreline closer despite Rowan’s pressure.

Rowan extended their lead early in the second half, scoring twice in a 10-second span at the 54:44 and 54:54 marks. Bella Moore scored the third goal, assisted by Olivia Giordano and Renata Cicala, followed by Giordano’s goal, assisted by Moore. Bland finished with six saves over 82 minutes, with first-year keeper Breanna Brown from Waldorf playing the final minutes.

Offensively, St. Mary’s managed two second-half shots, including a 77th-minute attempt on goal by Makayla Marvray from Charlotte Hall that tested the Rowan keeper. Brooke Hall from Mount Airy also took a late shot. Rowan outshot the Seahawks 22-2, including a 4-1 edge in corner kicks, and committed seven fouls to St. Mary’s six, with one offsides call against the Profs.

Statistically, Rowan held a clear advantage with four goals to St. Mary’s none, 11 shots on goal to one, and six saves to St. Mary’s one. The Seahawks, now 2-1-2, will seek a rebound on Wednesday, September 10, hosting Stevenson University in a non-conference match at 5 p.m. at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.

This loss contrasts with St. Mary’s earlier season performance, where they secured two wins and two draws. Rowan’s unbeaten run highlights their early-season form, with all goals coming from coordinated plays. The game’s outcome reflects the disparity in shot opportunities, a key factor in the 4-0 result.

St. Mary’s next home game offers a chance to regroup against Stevenson, a team with a 1-2-1 record entering the week. Kickoff details confirm a 5 p.m. start, providing an opportunity for local fans to support the team’s recovery effort. Rowan’s schedule next pits them against another regional opponent, though specifics remain unlisted.

The Seahawks’ season continues to unfold, with this defeat serving as a benchmark against stronger competition.
