PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – The 34th annual Calvert County Parks & Recreation Golf Classic Tournament is set for Friday, October 3, 2025, at Chesapeake Hills Golf Course in Lusby, bringing together local golfers for a day of competition and community support. The event, a staple in Southern Maryland’s recreational calendar, raises funds for the Therman Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides access to Parks & Recreation programs for Calvert County youth facing financial barriers.

The tournament honors Therman Gray, a former Calvert County Parks & Recreation employee known for his dedication to mentoring young people. Net proceeds directly support the scholarship fund, enabling children and teens to participate in activities such as sports leagues, summer camps, and fitness classes. In 2024, the fund assisted over 200 families, ensuring equitable access to programs that promote physical health and social development.

Registration is open through the Calvert County Parks & Recreation online portal at calvertcounty.perfectmind.com, using activity number 140669, or by emailing sports@calvertcountymd.gov to request a form. The entry fee is $95 per individual or $365 for a team of four, covering green fees, cart rental, beverages, prizes, and a provided lunch. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start, accommodating players of all skill levels on the 18-hole, par-70 course nestled along the Patuxent River.

Chesapeake Hills Golf Course, located at 11352 HG Trueman Road in Lusby, spans 6,545 yards and features a mix of open fairways and challenging greens, making it a fitting venue for the event. The course, owned and operated by Calvert County, has hosted the Golf Classic since its inception in 1991, fostering a tradition that blends recreation with philanthropy. Last year’s event drew 120 participants and raised $15,000, contributing to the scholarship fund’s mission to remove financial obstacles for local youth.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses and individuals looking to support the cause. Potential sponsors can contact the Parks & Recreation team at sports@calvertcountymd.gov for details on packages, which include signage at the event and recognition in promotional materials. Past sponsors, including local businesses like Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa and Dominion Energy, have played a key role in amplifying the tournament’s impact. In 2024, sponsorships accounted for nearly 40% of the event’s fundraising total, highlighting their importance to the scholarship fund’s success.

The Therman Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in 1992, reflects Calvert County’s commitment to inclusive recreation. Administered by the Parks & Recreation Department, the fund evaluates applications based on financial need, ensuring that no child is turned away from programs due to cost. Eligible activities include after-school programs, swim lessons, and youth sports, which serve over 5,000 participants annually across the county’s 10 parks and recreation facilities. The department’s 2025 budget allocates $50,000 to the fund, supplemented by events like the Golf Classic to meet growing demand.

Participants in the Golf Classic can expect a well-organized event with opportunities for networking and friendly competition. Prizes are awarded for top teams, longest drive, and closest-to-the-pin contests, adding excitement to the day. The included lunch, served at the clubhouse, features local catering, with last year’s menu offering Chesapeake Bay-inspired dishes like crab cake sliders, a nod to Southern Maryland’s culinary heritage.

The tournament also serves as a gathering point for Calvert County residents, from seasoned golfers to community supporters, all united by the goal of expanding access to youth programs. The event’s consistent success over three decades underscores its importance to the region, where recreational opportunities are a cornerstone of community life. Interested players are encouraged to register early, as spots are limited to 36 teams, and the event has sold out in previous years.

For those unable to participate, donations to the Therman Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund are accepted year-round through the Parks & Recreation Department. The county’s ongoing efforts to maintain affordable, accessible programs reflect a broader mission to enhance quality of life in Southern Maryland, where community ties and local pride run deep.
