Preseason coaches poll had pegged the Seahawks as favorites, receiving nine first-place votes. Notre Dame, in its third season in the conference after transitioning from the Colonial States Athletic Conference, has struggled early, posting a 0-4-2 overall mark through recent games against non-conference foes like Goucher and Washington Adventist.
St. Mary’s next faces Keystone College on October 11 in La Plume, Pennsylvania, at 2 p.m. Keystone entered the week at 2-9-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference, providing an opportunity for the Seahawks to extend their streak.
The Seahawks’ performance highlighted contributions from Maryland natives, with seven starters hailing from the state, including Nelson, Santos, Lewis, Eckman, Haney, Kuwik and Martinelli. This local talent pipeline underscores the program’s recruiting focus on regional high schools like River Hill, Oakland Mills, Old Mill, Loyola Blakefield, Richard Montgomery and Wheaton.
As the season progresses toward the United East tournament, set for November with the top seed hosting semifinals and final, St. Mary’s aims to defend its title and secure another NCAA berth. Tiebreakers for standings involve head-to-head results, goal differential and goals scored, per conference rules. The Seahawks’ offensive outburst against Notre Dame signals readiness for upcoming challenges, including road tests that test depth and resilience.
