An 88-year-old woman suffered injuries when a vehicle crashed into a Verizon Wireless store in Calvert County’s Market Square shopping center on Oct. 21, prompting an investigation by the Maryland State Police Crash Team.

Troopers from the Prince Frederick Barrack arrived at the scene in the 300 block of Market Square around 10:29 a.m. after reports of a car striking the building. The driver, an 84-year-old man operating a Toyota Camry, had parked in a spot outside the business. Authorities determined that the vehicle accelerated for undetermined reasons, mounted a raised curb, collided with the storefront and struck the woman, who was seated inside the store at the time.

Emergency responders from Squad 2 and nearby units arrived to find the Camry embedded in the structure and the woman in need of medical attention. She was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center in Largo for evaluation and treatment of injuries, the extent of which state police described as non-life-threatening in preliminary statements. The driver emerged from the incident without reported harm.

The Crash Team took charge of the inquiry, focusing on factors such as vehicle mechanics and driver condition. No charges have been filed as of Oct. 22, and investigators continue to reconstruct the sequence through witness accounts, surveillance footage and physical evidence from the site. The store sustained structural damage, leading to a temporary closure while crews assessed repairs and cleared debris.

Market Square, a 31-acre mixed-use development in central Prince Frederick, anchors retail activity across from Calvert Memorial Hospital. Completed in phases starting around 2010, the center features more than 120,000 square feet of shops, including national chains like Verizon, alongside dining and service outlets. Its location on Route 2-4 draws daily traffic from commuters and locals in a county where shopping plazas serve as key economic hubs amid suburban growth.
