Salisbury University netted a second-half goal to hand St. Mary’s College of Maryland a 1-0 defeat in women’s soccer Tuesday night at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium, closing the regular season for the host Seahawks.
The Sea Gulls struck in the 57th minute when Olivia Pasko converted an assist from Ava Wheeler, ending a scoreless first half marked by St. Mary’s defensive resolve. Goalkeeper Breanna Brown anchored the back line with 10 saves, including several from point-blank range, while the Seahawks limited Salisbury to one shot on goal despite 18 total attempts.

St. Mary’s generated seven shots overall, with Megan Rusk leading at two. Keira O’Neail, Brooke Hall, Lillee Covington and Madelyn Minichino each added one, Minichino’s the team’s only on-target effort late in the match. Salisbury held a 7-0 edge in corners and committed 10 fouls to St. Mary’s eight, with offsides called three times on the visitors and twice on the hosts.
The loss drops St. Mary’s to 11-7-2 overall but leaves its United East Conference mark untouched at 8-0, securing the No. 2 seed in the eight-team tournament. Salisbury, from the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference, improved to 12-4-2 in a nonconference matchup rescheduled from October 12 due to weather.
Head coach Peter Krech, a 2009 St. Mary’s alumnus in his fourth season directing the program, praised the defensive showing post-match. The Seahawks allowed just three goals in conference play this fall, posting four shutouts in their eight wins. Krech’s squad entered the game on a two-match skid after a 4-0 loss at Mary Washington on Oct. 25 and a 1-0 victory over Penn State Abington on Oct. 21.
Brown, a junior from Pasadena, Md., earned United East Defensive Player of the Week honors earlier this month for three clean sheets in four starts. Her 10 saves Tuesday marked a career high, surpassing her previous best of eight against Hood College on Sept. 3. The defense, coordinated by sophomore center back O’Neail, disrupted Salisbury’s possession in midfield stretches, forcing 12 turnovers in the opening 45 minutes.
Salisbury controlled second-half possession, earning five corners in the frame to build pressure. Pasko’s tally, her second of the season, came off a low cross from Wheeler following a sequence of sustained attacks. St. Mary’s responded with urgency, Rusk firing wide from 20 yards in the 68th minute and Minichino’s header cleared off the line in the 82nd.
The matchup highlighted regional rivalries in Southern Maryland Division III soccer, with Salisbury based 45 miles north in Salisbury on Maryland’s Lower Shore. Both programs compete under NCAA rules emphasizing student-athlete balance, with St. Mary’s athletes maintaining a 3.2 cumulative GPA across varsity teams. The Sea Gulls, coached by Jim Salisbury in his 28th year, advanced to the Coast-to-Coast semifinals last fall.
As the No. 2 seed, St. Mary’s hosts the winner of the No. 7 vs. No. 10 first-round matchup Saturday at 3 p.m. at Roberts Stadium. Penn State Harrisburg claimed the top seed at 8-0 in conference play. The Seahawks swept the regular-season series against potential quarterfinal foes, including a 2-0 win over No. 7 seed Penn College on Oct. 4.
Fans can stream Saturday’s quarterfinal live on the Seahawks Sports Network at smcmathletics.com, with archives available. Admission stands at $5 for adults, free for students and seniors, aligning with the college’s public mission established by the Maryland General Assembly in 1840.
