WALDORF, Md. — Shevonne Butler, a teacher at Huntington Learning Center of Waldorf, received the 2025 Tutoring Legacy Award from Huntington Learning Centers during the organization’s annual national conference, one of the company’s highest honors for educators nationwide.

The award highlights instructors who demonstrate exceptional commitment to Huntington’s goal of building students’ skills, confidence, and motivation for success. Butler accepted the signature “Apple Award” trophy as part of the recognition.

Butler, who also works as a special education teacher at Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School in Charles County Public Schools, brings more than 20 years of experience to her roles. In April 2025, the Board of Education of Charles County honored her as one of eight staff members for dedication and impact, noting her mentorship, workshops on individualized education plans, and advocacy for students and families.

At the Waldorf Huntington Center, Butler earned Teacher of the Month honors in June 2024 and August 2025.

“Helping students gain confidence and see their own growth is the most rewarding part of what I do,” said Butler. “I’m honored to be part of a team that changes lives every day.”

Brandy Merriman, center director at Huntington Learning Center of Waldorf, said Butler’s passion and commitment inspire staff and families alike.

Huntington Learning Centers, founded in 1977, operates nearly 300 locations across 41 states, offering personalized tutoring in reading, writing, math, science, study skills, and test preparation for exams like the SAT and ACT. Programs align with Common Core State Standards and include in-person, online, and hybrid formats. The organization holds accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the same body that accredits many K-12 institutions and universities.

The Waldorf center, located at 3284 Crain Highway in the Shoppers World Shopping Center, serves students from Charles County communities and partners with local schools for supplemental support. Families begin with an academic evaluation to identify needs, followed by customized plans delivered by certified teachers. Sessions focus on closing skill gaps, with average student gains including two grade levels in reading or math after about three months of instruction.

Huntington’s national conference gathers franchise owners, directors, and teachers annually to share best practices and recognize achievements. The Tutoring Legacy Award spotlights those who embody long-term dedication, similar to how Butler mentors colleagues and leads professional development on behavior strategies and modifications.

Parents seeking services at the Waldorf location can schedule consultations by calling 301.705.7100 or visiting the center’s page on the Huntington website. The organization also offers franchising opportunities for those interested in opening centers.

This recognition adds to Butler’s track record, which includes fostering relationships to support student responsibility and access to education in both public and supplemental settings.
